Disease Begins in the Gut

All Disease begins in the Gut
Gut and Psychology Syndrome

I feel at times the world is spinning hopelessly out of control.  I wish we could make everyone and everything stop so we could take a few deep breaths and reason together.  Can’t we see that we are poisoning our earth and with it those we love.  There are too many casualties in too many battles.  We are repeatedly told that technology is advancement.  We are able to dissect the genome and gaze at infinitesimal molecules, but as leaders (the USA) in the technological world we have one of the poorer records for health.  Research from the United States indicates that over the past 20 years childhood diseases and disorders have skyrocketed with Allergies up 700%, ADHD up 500%, Asthma up 300% and Autism up 1500%!  Ten years ago 1 in 10,000 children were diagnosed as autistic.  Today 1 in between 120 and 1 in 250 (depending on the study and region looked at) children are diagnosed with autism.  In California there has been a 10-fold increase in newly diagnosed cases in the last 10 years and the trend is rising.  It is estimated that today in California rates of autism are increasing by 1 child every 3 hours.  About 10% of the children in the United States are diagnosed with ADHD/ADD or learning disabled.  As these children move from childhood to adulthood they are more prone to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, depression or other mental illness.

This rising trend is not simply because we are better at diagnosing or we have broadened the parameters of these conditions to include more children.  As I see it, we have a full-blown crisis on our hands and the tools that have created the problem are not likely to be the ones that fix it.  Yet this is where the lions share of all research dollars are being spent in our country namely pharmaceutical cures.  Let me offer another solution or scenario that may help explain what is going on and how we may turn many of these conditions around giving children a normal healthy life.

It is the current thought among researchers and doctors who are not being funded or manipulated by the pharmaceutical or chemical industries that repeated exposures to unnatural drugs and toxins are poisoning and damaging our bodies.  The father of medicine, Hippocrates, cautioned (back before drugs ruled the day) that, “ALL Disease begins in the Gut”.  Could the words of a wizened sage still hold true today.  Let’s unfold what some of the current research is revealing.

It has been found that bottle fed babies develop a completely different and less healthy gut flora than breast fed babies.  The compromised gut flora in a bottle-fed baby later on predisposes her to many health problems.  Having acquired a weakened gut flora from the start, the typical modern mom had quite a few courses of antibiotics in her childhood and youth for various infections, earaches or acne.  It is a well-known fact that antibiotics have a serious damaging effect on the gut flora, because they wipe out the beneficial strains of bacteria in the gut as well as the harmful ones.

Many modern moms had been on birth control pills for many years before getting pregnant.  Birth control pills have a devastating effect on the beneficial (good) bacteria in the gut.  One of the major functions of the good bacteria in the gut flora is controlling and managing over 500 different species of pathogenic (bad) and opportunistic microbes.  When the good bacteria are destroyed the opportunistic microbes multiply in large colonies and occupy large areas of the digestive tract.  A modern diet of processed and fast foods provides the perfect nourishment for these colonies of bad microbes.  As a result of all these factors, a modern mom has a serious compromised gut flora by the time she is ready to have children.

Why are we talking about the mother gut flora?  Because her baby is born with a sterile gut.  In the first 20 days or so after the birth of the child, the baby’s sterile gut surface gets populated by a mixture of microbes, which comes from the mother.  So whatever microbial flora the mother has, she will pass to her newborn child.

If the child does not acquire a normal balanced gut flora, then the child will not digest and absorb foods properly, developing multiple nutritional deficiencies.  Malnourished patients demonstrate learning disabilities, psychiatric problems and allergies.  The properly balanced gut flora actively synthesizes various nutrients such as vitamin K and many of the B-vitamins.  Clinical experience shows that the best way to treat these deficiencies is to restore the beneficial bacteria in the gut.  Remember, there must be a symbiotic balance of the good as well as the bad microbes in the gut.  You must supply the good as the bad microbes are ever present.

In addition to nourishing the body, the beneficial bacteria in the gut act as the housekeepers of the digestive tract.  They coat the entire surface of the gut protecting it from invaders and toxins by providing a natural barrier and producing a lot of anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal substances.  It is no surprise that when the gut flora is out of balance, digestion cannot be healthy.  Again, there is a direct connection between digestive problems and learning disabilities, psychiatric disorders, allergies and a weakened immune system.

If a baby does not acquire appropriate gut flora, then the baby is left with a compromised or weakened immune system.  The result is a history of infections followed by courses of antibiotics, which damage the child’s gut flora and immune system even further.  Infections such as ear infections, chest infections, fevers, sore throats and skin rashes are common.  Many children that I see in my practice have had antibiotic therapy 4 and 5 times per year for several years.    Vaccinations given to a child with a compromised immune system can further weaken the immune system and provide a source of chronic persistent viral infections and autoimmune problems in children.

So the modern child, who we are talking about, did not get normal gut flora from the start and then damaged it further with repeated courses of antibiotics and vaccinations.  Is it any surprise that digestive problems, allergies, asthma, eczema, and a variety of neurological and psychological disorders are so common today.  I think it is inaccurate to look for a single causative factor for these conditions, when in fact; there appears to be a multiplicity of causes that have culminated into the epidemic we now face.

The average adult has about 4 pounds of bacteria in the gut.  In fact the number of microbial cells in the gut outnumber the number of cells in your entire body.  Good microbes aid in the digestion of food.  They synthesize various nutrients, they protect the gut from toxins and pathogenic bacteria, yeast and fungi that can affect brain function and they support production of different immune supporting cells.  Without control of the beneficial bacteria, the person’s digestive system instead of being a source of nourishment becomes a major source of toxicity in the body.

Powerful neurotoxins created from yeast such as Candida and Clostridia can get absorbed through the damaged gut lining and then cross the blood-brain barrier affecting the patients mental functioning.    Broad-spectrum antibiotics do not touch them while killing the beneficial bacteria in the gut, which are supposed to control and manage the yeasts and clostridia. So after a course of antibiotics these two pathogenic groups get even more out of control and grow stronger.  Clostridia overgrowth in the gut has also been associated with obesity.  Which may explain why it can be so difficult for some to lose weight.

Because of these imbalances in normal gut flora, children and adults as well are unable to properly breakdown and digest some common foods. Poor digestive health is also behind the growing trend towards gluten and dairy-free diets.  Many have learned simply by listening to their bodies that they do not do very well if they eat grains or dairy.  When the gut flora is out of balance, large proteins such as gluten and casein are difficult to breakdown and digest.  Gluten is a protein present in grains, mainly wheat, rye, and barley.  Casein is a milk protein present in milk products of all animals.  In gut dysbiosis (which literally means a bad condition of life), these proteins do not have a chance to be digested properly before they get absorbed into the blood stream.  They are absorbed into the bloodstream in a form with a similar chemical structure to opiates, like morphine and heroin. These substances called gluteomorphin and casomorphin get through the blood-brain-barrier and block certain areas of the brain just like morphine or heroin would do, causing various neurological and psychological symptoms. These substances, gluteomorphin and casomorphin, are routinely found in the urine of patients with schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, depression as well as rheumatoid arthritis.

Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia (poor coordination), schizophrenia and many other learning and mental problems are not incurable.  There are hundred of documented cases of recovery from autism, ADHD/ADD and schizophrenia when the child was given the right treatment.  Again, the solution many parents are finding is not as simple as taking a new drug or a super supplement.  There often must be a comprehensive approach.  But while there will be some effort and inconvenience involved, the benefits can be transforming and life-giving.

Dr. Kenneth Bock, a New York-based physician and author of Healing The New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Allergies & Asthma explains; “we are in the midst of a group of new childhood epidemics, which are directly related to industrialism, and to its associated pollution, environmental degradation, and toxicity.”  Included in the list of offenders are pollutants as well as chemicals in foods that the body is not able to metabolize.  An overload of toxins leads to chemical stress in the body that in turns creates chronic inflammation in the lungs (asthma), in the immune system (allergies), in the brain (attention deficit), and in the skin (eczema). There appears to be a direct correlation relating specific digestive disorders to conditions such as schizophrenia, autism, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder.

A comprehensive treatment approach focuses on treating each individual on the cellular level, ensuring that each cell has proper nutrition and is not over-burdened by toxins.  By repairing the digestive tract, adopting the right diet, taking nutritional supplements and detoxifying, the cells become more effective at supporting all organ and body systems.

Again the father of medicine, Hippocrates, cautioned, “ALL Diseases begin in the Gut”.  For this reason, it is important that we work to restore digestive health rather than just treating symptoms. Medication protocols focus primarily on modifying symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes. Re-establishing normal gut flora can address a myriad of health issues. The treatment described in Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride’s book Gut and Psychology syndrome is not drug based. Her treatment is a natural nutritional approach, which changes the child’s diet, supplementation and lifestyle.

A major part of recovery is modifying the diet to eliminate or reduce dietary stress.  The appropriate diet is key to allowing the digestive tract to heal and allow for the re-establishment of the good bacteria.  One of the great challenges for introducing any diet into a child’s life is the fact that the majority of children with learning disabilities are extremely ‘picky’ eaters.  Part of their problem is that their diet is limited to a handful of foods, which only perpetuates their biochemical and physiological abnormalities.

The rapid industrialization of food, medication, communication and lifestyle has challenged our bodies, which have not been able to adapt as quickly.  A focus on nutrition, non-toxic home and personal care products and a low stress lifestyle can facilitate the healing and recovery of those affected with GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) as Dr. Campbell-McBride has coined it.  We all need clean air, clear water, clean soil, wholesome food and fun.

The GAPS children and adults can present with symptoms of autism, ADHA, ADD, OCD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, sleep disorders, allergies, asthma and eczema in any possible combination.  Any child or adult with a learning disability, neurological or psychological problems and allergies should be thoroughly examined for gut dysbiosis.  Re-establishing normal gut flora and treating the digestive system of the person should be the number one treatment for these disorders, before considering treatment with drugs or otherwise.

Please take a moment to evaluate yourself and your children for any symptoms of gut dysbiosis.  Constipation (less than 2 to 3 bowel movements daily), diarrhea, eczema, asthma, allergies, indigestion, excessive gas or burping, tummy aches or pains.

Often the first step is to eliminate foods that are potentially risky.  Eliminating gluten and milk products, which may seem dramatic or difficult can be easily done with a little planning.  Most large grocery stores have a gluten-free section.  Use rice or almond milk instead of cow, goat or soymilk.  Avoid foods with chemical additives or preservatives.  Eat foods that are abundant in good bacteria such as sauerkraut (homemade or in the refrigerated section of the health food store).  I have found that even you picky eaters can develop a taste of mildly fermented vegetables.  A good probiotic supplement is recommended.  Digestive enzymes can also be beneficial.

Remember, symptoms are the body’s way to letting you know something is wrong.  Please take stock of your current level of health and of those you love.  I urge you to take pen to paper and draft a plan.  As you know, a goal not written, is only a wish.  Getting healthy can be as simple as putting the good things into the body and removing the bad.  Nourish and detoxify.  To that end, we can assist you.

Sluggish Thyroid? A Hidden Epidemic

One of the primary functions of the thyroid gland is for controlling our metabolism (how fast we burn calories) and thus our body weight. But the thyroid also has a strong influence on conditions such as depression, heart disease, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menopausal symptoms, muscle and joint pains, irritable bowel syndrome, or autoimmune diseases. Any of these conditions could indicate a problem with your thyroid.
The classic signs of a sluggish thyroid gland include weight gain, lethargy, poor quality hair and nails, hair loss, dry skin, fatigue, cold hands and feet, and constipation. However, some of the conditions that are not often associated with your thyroid include: High cholesterol, Irregular menstruation, Low sex drive, Infertility, Gum disease, Swelling and Fluid retention, and Skin conditions such as Acne and Eczema. Many people with low thyroid function, called hypothyroidism, are never diagnosed. And many of those who are diagnosed, are inadequately treated, resulting in partial recovery at best.

Hypothyroidism: The Hidden Epidemic

Hypothyroidism simply means you have a sluggish or underactive thyroid, which is producing less than adequate amounts of thyroid hormone. “Sub-clinical” hypothyroidism means you have none of the obvious symptoms and only slightly abnormal lab tests. Thyroid problems have become quite common because it is caused by the same lifestyle factors that also contribute to conditions such as obesity, cancer and diabetes.  These factors include poor dietary choice (primarily the overconsumption of sugar), eating processed chemical laden foods, stress, lack of sleep, environmental toxins, and lack of exercise.
It is estimated that perhaps 10 percent of the general population in the United States, and 20 percent of women over the age of 60, have sub-clinical hypothyroidism. Becoming aware of symptoms and home checks can give you a good indication of how your thyroid may be function. Identifying hypothyroidism and its cause is tricky business. Many of the symptoms overlap with other disorders, and many are vague.  A simple home check can be done by taking your temperature each morning for 3 days before you get out of bed and moving around.  If it is less than 97.6 degrees F, hypothyroidism may be an issue for you.
Sometimes people with hypothyroidism have significant fatigue or sluggishness, especially in the morning. You may have hoarseness for no apparent reason. Often hypothyroid people are slow to warm up, even in a sauna, and don’t sweat with mild exercise. Low mood and depression are common. Sluggish bowels and constipation are often a major issue, especially if you already get adequate water and fiber. Another interesting sign is thinning of the upper outer third of your eyebrows.

Chronic recurrent infections are also seen because thyroid function is important for your immune system. Family history is another important factor to look in to. Do you have close relatives with thyroid issues?

Building a Healthier Thyroid
Your lifestyle choices dictate, to a great degree, how well your thyroid will function and heal.  Building a healthy thyroid gland requires little more than building a healthy life.  By making some fundamental changes improvements can be noticed quickly and can be lasting
Diet
Garbage In, Garbage Out is the old saying of reaping what you sow.  If you expect to have a smooth running engine, you must provide it with quality fuel.  It is important that you eliminate junk food, processed food, artificial sweeteners, trans and hydrogenated fats and oils, and anything with chemical ingredients. Eat whole, unprocessed foods, and choose as many organics as possible.  In addition, foods and supplements can provide good balanced sources of iodine and other nutrients are important for your health and recovery.
Eat plenty of sea vegetables such as seaweed, which are rich in minerals and iodine (hijiki, wakame, arame, dulse, nori, and kombu). This is probably the most ideal form of iodine supplementation as it is also loaded with many other beneficial nutrients.
Thyroid Formula from Western Botanicals is a great source the iodine-rich seaweeds. Truth be told not many of us will be eating seaweed on a daily or significant basis, so take the supplement.
Eat Brazil nuts, which are rich in selenium and will help the thyroid gland.
Get plenty of sunlight to optimize your vitamin D levels; if you live where sunlight is limited, use vitamin D3 supplementation.
Eat foods rich in vitamin A, such as dandelion greens, carrots, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, collard greens, and sweet potatoes.
Make sure you are eating enough omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon, flax seeds and walnuts are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Very good sources include scallops, cauliflower, cabbage, cloves and mustard seeds, halibut, shrimp, cod, tuna, kale, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts.
Coconut oil is one of the best foods you can eat for your thyroid. Coconut oil is a saturated fat comprised of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are known to increase metabolism and promote weight loss. Coconut oil is very stable (shelf life of 3 to 5 years at room temperature), so your body is much less burdened with oxidative stress than it is from many other vegetable oils. And coconut oil does not interfere with T4 to T3 conversion the way other oils can.  Avoid processed oils, such as canola, corn, safflower, etc.
Use pure, organic coconut oil in your cooking – it’s great for stir-frying and sautéing many different meats and vegetables.  Use oil olive for salad dressings and coconut oil for cooking and baking.
A good diet allows us to put the good nutrients into our bodies and allows us to expel the wastes and toxins that we need to get out of our body.
Taking a greens supplement such as Western Botanicals’ Earth’s Nutrition or Bountiful Blend will nourish the whole body and quickly and noticeably strengthen hair and nails, which are often a problem with low thyroid function.
Liver Detox Tea and Liver Gallbladder Formula from Western Botanicals will cleanse toxicity from within the cells of your body speeding the healing and increasing your energy.
Leaky Gut Syndrome
Prolonged digestive distress can lead to what is called a leaky gut syndrome.  This can results in food sensitivities because food particles are absorbed into the bloodstream before they can be adequately digested and broken down.  Chronic inflammation throughout the body caused by gluten and food sensitivities can contribute to thyroid dysfunction.  A regimen of probiotics (the good bacteria) can help to heal a leaky gut.  Take probiotics in capsules, sauerkraut (homemade or from the refrigerated section of the health food store – not processed or pasteurized), yogurt, kefir, and sourdough bread if you tolerate wheat/gluten.
Soy
Another food that is bad for your thyroid are most products made with soy.  Soy is NOT the health food the agricultural and food companies would have you believe.  Soy is high in isoflavones (or goitrogens), which are damaging to your thyroid gland. Thousands of studies now link soy foods to malnutrition, digestive stress, immune system weakness, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, infertility and a host of other problems – in addition to damaging your thyroid. The exception in the soy family would be properly fermented organic soy products such as soy sauce, natto, miso, and tempeh are fine – it’s the unfermented soy products that you should stay away from.

Sugar

The biggest offender to our health and the thyroid gland is SUGAR – namely corn syrup, which is in most processed foods.  Sugar is a stimulant that puts stress on the thyroid gland.  High-Fructose Corn Syrup wrecks havoc on your metabolism and must be avoided.  Avoid all other artificial sweeteners as well as any other chemical additives to foods.  You must be eating whole natural foods!
Iodine
Iodine is a key component of thyroid hormone. In fact, the names of the different forms of thyroid hormone reflect the number of iodine molecules attached – T4 has four attached iodine molecules, and T3 has three – showing what an important part iodine plays in thyroid biochemistry. Most Americans don’t get enough iodine in their diets (which is why iodine is sometimes added to table salt – however I recommend using sea salt, which also contains iodine as well as the other minerals).  Consider taking a good herbal supplement high in iodine rich seaweeds such a Western Botanicals Thyroid Formula.
Chlorine, fluorine and bromine are also culprits in thyroid function, and since they are halides like iodine, they compete for your iodine receptors. Be wary of plastics, pesticides, hot tub treatments, fire retardants, some flours and bakery goods, and even some soft drinks. Drink and bathe with filtered water if at all possible.
Stress and Adrenal Function
Stress is one of the worst thyroid offenders. Your thyroid function is intimately tied to your adrenal function, which is intimately affected by how you handle stress. Many of us are under chronic stress, which results in increased adrenalin and cortisol levels, and elevated cortisol has a negative impact on thyroid function. When stress becomes chronic, the flood of stress chemicals (adrenalin and cortisol) produced by your adrenal glands interferes with thyroid hormones and can contribute to obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, unstable blood sugar, and more.
A prolonged stress response can lead to adrenal exhaustion (also known as adrenal fatigue), which is often found alongside thyroid disease.  See Dr. Christensen’s previous article on Adrenal Fatigue entitled; Tired of Being Tired.

Environmental toxins also place additional stress on your body. Pollutants such as petrochemicals, organochlorines, pesticides and chemical food additives negatively affect thyroid function.

Exercise

One of the best de-stressors is exercise, which is why it is so beneficial for your thyroid. Exercise directly stimulates your thyroid gland to secrete more thyroid hormone. Exercise also increases the sensitivity of all your tissues to thyroid hormone. It is even thought that many of the health benefits of exercise stem directly from improved thyroid function.  Even something as simple as a 30-minute walk is a great form of exercise. Don’t forget to add strength training to your exercise routine, because increasing your muscle mass helps raise your metabolic rate.
Exercise, exercise, exercise!
 Sleep
Getting enough sleep is vital.  Make getting enough sleep a priority. Inadequate sleep contributes to stress and prevents your body from regenerating fully.  Read up on better sleeping strategies.

Thyroid Hormone Replacement
Most people who need or have been taking thyroid medication have been told that they will need to be on this thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of their lives.  This is only true if your thyroid gland has been irradiated and effectively killed so that it will not be able to be healed.  It is always best to get your thyroid working again by treating the underlying causes, as opposed to taking an external source of thyroid hormone.
If it is necessary for you to take thyroid medication, you may want to talk to your doctor about using a natural thyroid product, like Armour Thyroid.  The medication Armour is a combination of T4, T3 and T2 made from desiccated, or dried, porcine(pig) thyroid. Many improvements have been made in the product, making it a safe and effective option for treating hypothyroidism today. In fact, a study done ten years ago clearly demonstrated that patients with hypothyroidism showed greater improvements in mood and brain function if they received treatment with Armour Thyroid than if they received the common thyroid replacement hormone drug Synthroid (synthetic thyroid).

Final Thoughts
A thyroid problem is not unlike any other chronic illness – you must address the underlying issues if you hope to correct the problem. If you approach it from a comprehensive, holistic perspective, you will find in time that all of the little steps you take will ultimately result in your feeling much better than you could have ever imagined.  As you follow these recommendations, not only will your energy and stamina improve but so will your health.  By following these recommendations you will also build health and vitality whether you have a thyroid issue or not. But give it time, we are all in this for the long haul and you should expect a couple of years to fully turn this situation around.

Blessings,

Dr. Kyle Christensen

Boosting Natural Immunity

The immune system is perhaps one of the most complex and fascinating systems of the body.   The immune system’s prime function is protecting the body against infection and the development of cancers or abnormal cells.  Conditions such as colds, influenza, allergies, asthma, mononucleosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Auto-immune disorders such as MS and many cancers are all directly associated with a weakened immune system.  The key to recovery is Boosting Natural Immunity.

Stress, good and bad, causes an increase in the adrenal gland hormones which inhibit the immune system.  Prolonged stress can leave a person susceptible to infections, cancer and other illnesses.  Inadequate rest can be the greatest strain on the immune system. During sleep and deep relaxation, powerful immune enhancing compounds are released and many immune functions are greatly increased.  Good quality sleep and relaxation to counteract stress are vital for healing and a healthy immune system.

Eating highly sweet and sugary foods reduces the white blood cells ability to destroy bacteria.
100 grams (1/2 cup) of sugar in the form of glucose, fructose, honey and fruit juices significantly reduces the immune response.  Twenty-four ounces of soda pop has about 1/2 cup of sugar.  In contrast, eating starches has no negative effect.  The average American consumes 150 grams of refined sugar in their diets each day.  The inescapable conclusion is that most Americans have a chronically depressed immune system.  Consuming simple sugars (even orange juice) during an infection is detrimental to the immune response.

Obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and high triglycerides also inhibit various immune functions.  Consuming alcohol increases susceptibility to infections.  Several herbs such as Echinacea, Garlic, Goldenseal, Cat’s Claw, Pau d’Arco have been shown to enhance the body’s immune mechanisms.  These herbs are effective against viral as well as bacterial infections.  Studies and research have also demonstrated that Vitamins A, beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Zinc, Iron, and pyridoxine (vitamin B6) all enhance and boost the body’s immune system.  These vitamins should be taken from whole food sources rather than the chemical forms found in most vitamin and mineral supplements.  (See our article, Why Take Whole Herbs?).

Infectious Diseases
Microorganisms are everywhere: in the soil, water and air.  Everyday we eat, drink and breathe them.  Yet it is rare that these organisms invade, multiply and produce infections in humans.  When we do get an infection often they are so mild, we don’t even have symptoms.  Occasionally, a microorganism (bacteria, virus, parasites, etc.) will gain a foothold in our bodies causing a infection.  This triggers an immune response to fight and eliminate the infection.

The key to overcoming an infection is to boost the immune system so that the body will eliminate the invading organism and to kill or destroy the organism directly.  The primary tool in medicines arsenal are antibiotics.  The overuse and abuse of antibiotics have resulted in virulent (strong and powerful) bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and are likewise difficult to fight naturally.

Some infectious illnesses are fatal if untreated.  If a potentially fatal infectious illness occurs, treat aggressively with herbal protocols, such as Anti-Plague Syrup, The Cold Sheet Treatment, and the Incurables Checklist.  You will notice that the same treatment is recommended for many of these disease.  The principle to learn here is that our objective is build and strengthen the body so that the body will effectively fight the disease and heal itself, rather than trying to attack the organism with a drug we hope will be effective.  Please note that many of these conditions are potentially life threatening and medical assistance can offer the quickest and safest solution.

The Common Cold is the Cure
For years scientists have tried to discover “the cure” for the common cold.  It has not been found and never will be, because the common cold (or a rhinovirus) is the cure.  It is the cure for increased toxicity within the body and a depressed immune system.  Getting a cold is the body’s way of “cleaning house”, dumping toxins and exercising the immune system.
Modern medicine focuses primarily on relieving symptoms, even though symptoms may be part of the healing process.  For example, a fever increases the ability and effectiveness of the white blood cells in fighting illness.  When a fever is reduced with drugs, the immune response is diminished. Nearly eighty percent of certain infectious illnesses are viral and won’t respond to antibiotics.  The use of antibiotics has been shown to weaken the immune system and should be reserved for life and death emergencies.    The key to a speedy recovery is to assist and support the body in the healing process.

Focus on cleansing the body and boosting the immune system.
1. Drink plenty of unsweetened fluids (herbal teas like Red Raspberry or Catnip are best).  Our definition of “plenty of fluids” is one gallon within 24 hours.
2. Take immune stimulating herbs such as Western Botanicals™ Immune Boost™ and/or Anti-Plague every waking hour.  Make sure your channels of elimination are working well.  Immune Boost Syrup is ideal for children.  It is our echinacea-based formula in a base of maple syrup and cinnamon.  It is delicious and ideal for the child whole is constantly getting sick.
3. Use Colon Cleanse™, and the Liver & Kidney Formulas as necessary.
4. Increase your Earth’s Nutrition or Bountiful Blend to two or three times daily.
5. Review the Incurables checklist in this guide and do as many things as you can.

The more you can do, the stronger will be your immune response.  Next time you feel a cold or flu coming on, rather than going for the drugs, do something healthy instead.  Take your herbs.   Drink a gallon of tea.   Slow down and rest.  Work with the body’s natural healing processes. Remember, the body has an intelligence greater than medical science.

Incurables Checklist

The Incurables Program was originally taught by Dr. John Christopher. It is designed to cleanse the body and assist the healing response. The key to healing is to work on cleansing and building all the systems of the body. This checklist offers you many things you can do. We have added to Dr. Christopher’s original concept to be more inclusive.  Even if you are not ill, consider adding some of these to your life.  We’ve divided these under Body, and  Mind & Spirit.  We believe that body, mind and spirit are so connected and interrelated that you cannot effect one without influencing the other.  Healing is a spiritual adventure.  Be open to all possible therapies or tasks, particularly those which will stretch and heal your spirit.  View these lists as posibilities on your road to health.  Incorporate those that “speak to you”.

What to do for your BODY

  • Fresh Fruit or Vegetable Juice = 1 gallon per day. Use carrot juice as a base for vegetable juices.  Set a goal to buy a juicer and use it daily. Juice to both cleanse and nourish your body.
  • Water, drink at least 8 cups of filtered water daily or more if it is hot or with physical active.
  • Try a RAW foods diet- emphasize organic fruits and vegetables.  If you are seriously ill consume only fresh carrot juice. Eight to sixteen ounces every waking hours (about a gallon of fresh carrot juice daily).    Once you are off the juices you can go to a diet of fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, and soaked and sprouted beans and grains.  Find organic produce grown locally.   No cooked foods (breads, baked potatoes, tofu, etc.) Avoid soy (except soy sauce and miso).
  • Eat only grass-fed red meat, organic eggs, raw milk. Eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut, yogurt and kefir). Look into and study Nourishing Traditional Diets (Weston A. Price Foundation.  www.westonaprice.org)
  • Dry skin brushing 2x/daily.
  • Don’t consume alcohol or caffeine, soda pop, or foods with artificial sweetners, flavors, colors, etc.  Don’t use tobacco in any form. Avoid processed oils - trans fats and hydrogenated oils.
  • Digestive enzymes are essential for the proper absorption and assimilation of foods.
  • Begin wearing only natural fiber clothing such as cotton, linen, silk and wool.
  • No perfumes, lotions, chemicals worn on the body. Use castile soaps and essential oils.
  • Take Earth’s Nutrition™ or Bountiful Blend - 3 times daily (2 Tbs. - 3x/daily)
  • Immune Boost™ (Echinacea combination) or Anti-Plague Formula.  Take every waking hour (5 or 6 times daily for 3 months).  Either of these will dramatically boost your natural immunity.
  • Cayenne pepper - 1 teaspoon 3x/day or use capsules - work up to this dosage
  • Garlic - 8 to 10 cloves per day if really ill, 2 to 3 cloves (not bulbs) per day maintenance

  • Exercise - work up to one hour 4 to 6 times per week - walking outdoors is best
  • Sun/Air bath 15 minutes daily - work up to this much time. Avoid getting burned.
  • Walk Barefoot on the grass or earth 10 - 15 minutes daily particularly if you suffer from insomnia.
  • Take a short nap daily (15-20 minutes)
  • Practice Deep Breathing Exercises Daily.

What to do for your MIND & SPIRIT

  • Meditate or sit and be still every day 5 to 45 minutes daily begin with breath observation meditation.  Set aside time to reflect on what is important.
  • Read uplifting books.  Focus of the positive and beautiful in life.
  • Go to bed by 9 p.m. when you can.  If you are tired during the day, rest more.  Rest allows the body to give its full attention and energy to healing and rebuilding tissues.
  • List your most deeply felt priorities and goals.  Does the way you spend your time match this list?
  • Keep a log of your spending.  Find ways to reduce financial stress.
  • Restrict TV viewing and internet use to those shows/sites you value.
  • Turn off your cell phone, pager and fax at the end of the workday.
  • Develop relationships by allowing yourself time for conversation, letter-writing and shared activities.
  • Analyze your schedule to see where it might be simplified.
  • Give away or sell possessions you haven’t used for six months.  Get rid of 1/3 of your possessions.
  • Allow your children only one extracurricular activity at a time.
  • Pray 2 to 3 times daily.  Be thankful and bless people.
  • Think uplifting positive thoughts. Live in harmony.  Be a peacemaker.  Stand up for the one not present, listen for the one not there to hear, see for the one without sight, and give praise and credit to others whenever you are able.
  • Help others.  Don’t be consumed with your own problems.  Live a life of blessing and serving others.
  • Discover your mission and purpose in life.  Look to your illness/injury as a spiritual awakening.  Learn from your condition.  Become a student of your healing.  This is an opportunity for introspection and self-discovery.  Live your life as the spiritual adventure that it is.
  • Read and ponder the inspired texts or scriptures from your religion daily. Study, grasp and practice the principles in these writings.
  • Focus on Healing your life, not just your body.
  • Forgive and let go of past hurts, traumas, betrayals, etc.  You can not heal if you do not release fear, anger, hate, guilt, etc.  Hanging on to negative feelings will canker your soul.   Repent (change your heart) and Forgive (release and let go of negative emotions).
  • Above all, follow the inner voice of your spirit.  It will guide, direct and teach you what you need to do.  The road to health (spiritual and physical) is not intended to be easy.  Our lives are a spiritual journey designed to help us discover who we really are with the help of our challenges.

Allergies are in the Air

Spring is in the air and while many of us look forward to spending more time in the sun as the trees and flowers burst forth with new life, others are experiencing an inward dread of the coming of allergy season, complete with itchy eyes, runny nose, sinus pressure and generally not feeling very well.  It is interesting that the old medical literature of 100 years ago rarely talked of allergies as an ailment that needed to be dealt with.  Yet today allergies are one of the most common maladies suffered by modern Americans. Allergy medication every year is among the top five best selling drugs and if you count asthma, eczema and food allergies, almost one out of three Americans has some sort of allergy.  It is believed that the rise in allergies is due to changes in our lifestyles and habits.
The best theory on the cause of allergies that I have come across is related to an imbalance in the functioning of our adrenal gland. When the adrenal gland is weakened or becomes under-active due to prolonged stress (from a number of factors such as poor diet, inadequate sleep and rest, and emotional stress), the adrenal gland cannot keep up with the demands put on to control the inflammation within the tissues caused by stress.  This can result in asthma, eczema (blistered and weeping skin) and hay fever. The adrenal hormones also regulate such functions as sugar balance, mineral balance and sexual development. As a result of weakened adrenal function many of the systems of the body can be affected.  All of the hormones made by the adrenal gland are manufactured from cholesterol.
By eating a diet that has too little of the healthy fats (from fish, meat, butter, whole milk and healthy non-processed oils), we may be depriving our body of the nutritional building blocks to make vital hormones.  In our “fat paranoid” culture, fat is positioned as the enemy but the truth is that all healthy cultures have valued healthy fats (predominately from animal sources) to build health.  The real culprit to our obesity is not natural fats, but refined carbohydrates (sugars and flour), processed foods, over-eating and not enough exercise.
The adrenal glands also rely on Vitamin C complex.  This is not to be confused with taking vitamin C in some form of ascorbate.  The body needs the whole vitamin C complex from whole natural sources rather than some chemical derivative (ascorbic acid or one of its cousins such as calcium ascorbate, which comprise only about 4% of the total vitamin C complex).
The adrenal gland is very sensitive to blood sugar levels and when you consume refined carbohydrates (foods made with white sugar and white flour like breads, pastas, sweets and treats), these refined carbohydrates add additional stress often resulting in a worsening of allergies.  The link between high blood sugar levels and allergies has been well documented in many human and animal studies.
The conventional drug therapy for allergies is to take some sort of cortisone, which may offer temporary relief, but further suppresses and weakens our adrenal glands.  By approaching allergies from a nutritional and supplement program we can rebuild and rebalance the adrenal glands.  If allergies are symptoms of weakened adrenal glands, it makes much more sense to correct the underlying cause rather than trying to continually modify the symptoms.  The good news is your symptoms can be relieved and controlled through healthy natural approaches as you rebuild and strengthen your body.
Diet
·      Absolutely avoid all refined carbohydrates including bread, pasta and sugar, as well as most sweet foods such as maple syrup and fruit juices, while any allergic symptoms are present.
·      Avoid foods that increase estrogen in the body such as soy containing foods which aggravate allergies.
·      Use Bone broths and natural sea salts (Celtic or “Real Salt”) to aid in mineral balance.
·      Eat whole natural foods that are naturally rich in healthy fats (animal fats, fish and their oils, egg yolks, whole raw milk, coconut, olive and flax oils) to help rebuild your adrenals.  Remember quality meats, eggs and fats should be from healthy natural sources that are free from hormones, antibiotics, etc.
·      Eat foods high in the full vitamin C complex such as sprouts, sauerkraut, raw milk and fresh berries.
·      Don’t overeat.

For Seasonal or Environmental Allergy Relief
To help “immunize” yourself against hay fever from pollen, eat 1 tablespoon of raw honey (locally produced if possible) with the addition of about 1/2 Tablespoon of fresh bee pollen.  Start with a few granules of bee pollen and gradually increase to the full dose. This can make a big difference fairly quickly.
Building Strength and Support
Build and strengthen your adrenal glands by using an herbal supplement like Western Botanicals Line of Products for those with allergies:
For most people, I recommend the following:
Take either Super Adrenal Formula (1 to 2 dropperfuls 3 times daily) Or Ginseng Plus Formula (same dosage for liquids or 3 capsules 2x daily)
And take Nature’s C Complex -  complete Vitamin C complex from all natural sources ( 2 capsules 3x/day)
Then for relief of symptoms:
Take either Allergy Formula Capsules – for hay fever symptoms Or Sinus Allergy Formula – if sinus pressure and congestion are your main symptoms Or Allergy Formula Syrup for children with allergies
For Food Allergies
Try our Digestion Aid Formula AND our Liver/Gallbladder Formula(as directed on label).
These are general recommendations that many people have enjoyed success with.  As always consult with your health care practitioner before you begin any new supplement or program.
Most people get significant relief from this regimen after about three to four weeks.  Some “acquired” allergies (those that you are not born with) can be more resistant and result from what I refer to as a programming problem.  Fortunately, there are natural treatments that can desensitize you from foods and substances that you may have developed an allergy to.
While millions suffer from allergies, it is comforting to know that you don’t have to be one of them.  By taking a few simple steps, you can enjoy the sweet smells of a glorious Spring.
Blessings,

Blood Sugar Balance & Diabetes

I am in constant awe at the design of our human bodies with its complex interplay between systems checking and monitoring feedback.  Readjusting when necessary seamlessly and without our perception.  And so it is with blood sugar regulation.  There may be as many as 10 hormonal or biochemical reactions that occur during the early states of hypoglycemia.  Normal blood sugar should range between 80 and 110.  Under 80 is considered hypoglycemia and over 110 is hyperglycemia.

With the first sign of hypoglycemia you feel shaky, jittery, anxious, sweaty, confused and irritable.  The lower the blood sugar, the more severe these symptoms.  As soon as your blood sugar drops below 80 the body produces a number of    hormones, principally adrenaline and  glucagon.  The adrenaline causes the shaky, jittery feeling, while glucagon helps to raise the blood sugar levels by converting fat into sugar within the liver.

These internal mechanisms and many more are all built-in survival mechanisms.  Remember the body was designed to survive and will not avoid pain or discomfort to insure survival.  The body’s survival mechanisms are so sophisticated that it will even prioritize and sacrifice ‘non-essential’ parts of the body in order to maintain life.  My point is that hunger and starvation are very real and critical survival issues and our body has many ways of getting our attention so that we do something about it.  Each of us can get pretty motivated to remedy the problem of low blood sugar.  That’s what being hungry and eating are all about.

On the other hand, high blood sugar or hyperglycemia is an entirely different issue that our bodies do not have as much historical experience with.  The real survival issue mankind has experienced is getting enough nourishment.  Having too much is a relatively new problem and is the hallmark of a civilized society.  Diabetes (Type II) is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the western world.  Complications of diabetes include heart disease and circulation problems, kidney disease, degeneration of the retina leading to blindness, neuropathy resulting in numbness, tingling, pain and burning in the hands and feet, foot ulcers leading to gangrene and a high risk of infection.

Type II Diabetes occurs when for many years the foods eaten raise the blood sugar more than the muscles can burn it up.  In biochemistry, there are three basic food groups: fats, proteins and carbohydrates.  Fats are broken down to become the building blocks of hormones, prostaglandins and cell membranes.  Proteins breakdown to amino acids, the building blocks of our tissues.  And carbohydrates are used for only one thing: energy.

Protein and fat requirements are relatively fixed and are controlled by our appetite.  If you overeat fats and proteins, you will feel sick or nauseous.  Carbohydrates intake should be intimately related to our level of activity.  The more active you are the more carbs you should be eating.  If you run a marathon each day, you should eat 300 grams of carbohydrates.  (equivalent to 6 brownies or 20 potatoes).  You see the problem here.  Too many of us are eating the energy needed for running a marathon (26.2 miles) and living fairly inactive lives.

It’s because you say you are tired which is one of the primary signs of high blood sugar or hyperglycemia.  As the pancreas tires of producing insulin so voraciously, the cells of the body begin to fight back and actually become insulin resistant.  Remember, the job of insulin is to escort the sugar from the blood, into the cell.  This means that as the blood sugar levels are persistently high, and the insulin levels keep rising, the cells will actually build a shield or wall around themselves to slow down this influx of excess sugar.  Fats do not contribute to diabetes with one exception - Trans-Fats made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.  When these fats or oils get incorporated into the cell walls, they interfere with the insulin receptors making your cells insulin resistant even when you don’t eat too many carbohydrates.  The real kicker here is that very often these trans-fatty foods are also high in sugar.  A double whammy!  Foods such as French fries, cookies, crackers, cake, donuts and margarine on bread or potatoes are a recipe for blood sugar disaster.

By the time someone is diagnosed with diabetes, they are typically suffering from many other ailments including hypertension, obesity, arthritis, hypothyroidism, digestive problems, restless leg syndrome and edema (fluid retention) with all of the attendant medications to help manage the symptoms associated with each of these problems.  And so the person with adult-onset diabetes typically presents with a multitude of conditions.  But don’t fret, because the natural treatment for diabetes is one that regularly helps these other conditions simultaneously.

As you may have suspected, your recovery from diabetes will necessitate that you control or limit your intake of carbohydrates.  A lot has been written regarding the glycemic index.  This refers to the rate at which sugar is absorbed into the blood stream from various foods.  For example, white sugar is given a score of 100 because it accelerates right into the blood, while whole grains release sugars much slower and have a lower number on the glycemic index.  With all of this said, I’m going to tell you that you don’t need to pay too close attention to the glycemic index.  This can best be illustrated with the example of alcohol consumption.  If you were to have a couple of alcoholic drinks on an empty stomach, the alcohol will rush right into your bloodstream with all of the attendant effects.  However, the same amount of alcohol consumed with a large meal will be diluted and not cause the risk of drunkenness.  This same principle works with carbohydrates in the diet.

Carbohydrates eaten alone and on an empty stomach regardless of how they score on the glycemic index will cause a greater rise in blood sugar than if eaten with fats and proteins.
So the key to eating to reduce and balance blood sugar issues is to focus on eating fats and proteins.  You should restrict your carbohydrate intake to 60 grams per day until your blood sugar normalizes.  If you eat any more than 65-70 grams of carbohydrates per day, your body will be forced to make more insulin sabotaging your recovery.

Your diet should be rich in trace minerals, particularly zinc, vanadium and chromium.  Zinc is abundant in red meats and shellfish, particularly oysters.  Vanadium is found in extra-virgin unfiltered olive oil.  And chromium is found in nutritional yeast, molasses and organ meats like liver.  These minerals and many other can also be obtained from mineral-rich bone broth and sea salt.

Additionally you need vitamin B-6.  This fragile vitamin is easily destroyed by heat, so drinking raw milk and rarely meats is important.  Finally, high levels of vitamins A and D will protect against the complications of diabetes.  And vitamin D is necessary for insulin production.  Traditional foods such as butterfat from grass fed animals, organ meats, shellfish and fish liver oils are excellent sources.  We recommend a good cod liver oil supplement that will provide 20,000 IU of vitamin A daily.  Evening Primrose oil can also be used at 1000 mg/day.

A brief word about synthetic vitamins and minerals.  Mounting scientific research is proving what we have long suspected. Man-made versions of vitamins and mineral supplements are not whole or complete.  They may stimulate the body for a short time but will invariably create a greater imbalance in the body.  We recommend only whole food sources for the nutrients you put into your body.  Don’t cheat your body by taking something that has been chemically altered in a pharmaceutical laboratory.

In addition, there are many wonderful herbs that seem to be designed specifically to help with diabetes.  Gymnema is an Ayruvedic herb which is referred to as “sugar buster”.  The leaves or tincture taken directly in your mouth will prevent your taste buds from tasting sugar or sweetness.  I do this with my boy scouts.  Give them a marshmallow, then have them taste gymnema, followed by another marshmallow.  The reaction is quite comical.  The second marshmallow has no sweetness and it is like chewing tasteless foam.  Gymnema also lowers blood sugar and is currently the only substance shown to regenerate destroyed pancreatic islet cells in Type I diabetes.

We also recommend our Pancreas Support Formula as the herbs in this product such as devils’ club, and cedar berries have shown to be highly effective in the management of blood sugar imbalances.  The common kitchen herb, cinnamon has been shown to triple insulin’s efficiency.  And the herb, stevia, is nature’s all-natural non-sugar sweetener.
Please don’t kid yourself into thinking that diabetes is a simple problem.  You’ve got a dragon by the tail and for true health and lasting results you need to take this problem seriously.  In my practice of over 20 years, I have seen far too many wonderful people die due to the complications of diabetes.

The good news in this recovery program is you need not go hungry or be on a dull or difficult diet.  There are no restrictions on total food intake, nor do you need to pay attention to the so-called glycemic index of various carbohydrate foods.  Fats consumed with any carbohydrate will lower the glycemic index.  You need to eat abundantly from good fats and proteins - only carbohydrate foods need to be restricted.

In Summary:
Avoid:  Excess carbohydrates and all processed carbohydrates (sugar and white flour) and Foods containing hydrogenated fats (trans fatty acids)
Emphasize: Focus on eating healthy proteins and Fats.  Carbohydrate restriction to 60 grams per day until blood sugar normalizes - it may take 12 months.  Be obsessed with eating Proteins and Fats, rather than avoiding carbohydrates.
Raw milk, raw cheese and rare or raw meat and fish for vitamin B-6
Focus on Raw Foods as many have been able to turn around Type II Diabetes in 30 days by eating a strict raw food diet.
Eat Fish and Animal Fats and organ meats rich in vitamin A & D
   Unfiltered olive oil for vanadium
Red meat and oysters for zinc.  Eat at least 9 ounces of red meat (beef) per week.
Make Bone broths, Celtic Sea Salt and organic foods for minerals.
Cod liver oil to provide 20,000 IU vitamin A each day.  Also for Vitamin D.
Evening Primrose oil - 1,000 mg per day
Gymnema - 2 capsules - three times daily
Pancreas Support Formula 2 capsules - three times daily
Earth’s Nutrition - for nutritional yeast and overall nutritional support - 1 scoop daily.
Cinnamon capsules - 3 daily and use in cooking.

In conclusion, there is much that can be done for diabetes.  While drug therapies may help to manage your symptoms, do not look to them to restore your health.  As you regain your health, you will discover your doctor reducing your medications.  Your energy will return and you just may regain your life.

Pain and Inflammation

There is nothing that dampens motivation quite like pain.  The pain of injury or over-doing may be tolerable.  But chronic pain, joint stiffness, swelling and inflammation that persist can be very discouraging.  Pain is our body’s most effective way to get our attention alerting us that something is wrong. Once alerted it is important that we listen and take the appropriate action to resolve the cause. Unfortunately, slick advertisers have educated us that the best way to deal with pain is to take a pain-relieving drug. Most of us have become savvy to the fact that most drugs are designed to manage or control symptoms and NOT assist in the healing or recovery process.  While a pain reliever may help you make it through the day or through a long night, what you really want is something that you can do to improve, not cover up.  Fortunately, there is hope and there can be lasting relief.

While there are over 100 different kinds of arthritis, there are two main types:  Degenerative arthritis also called Osteoarthritis and Inflammatory arthritis also called Rheumatoid Arthritis.  The treatment recommendations are very similar, with only a few variations, but those who are willing to make a few changes can literally get their life back.  An active life without joint pain is pretty wonderful.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the result of progressive wearing away of cartilage and other structures that cushion the bones where they meet. As these tissues wear away, the bones at the joint begin to erode and no longer move smoothly and easily. The body responds to this irritation by depositing minerals or calcium at the joints forming bone spurs. The person with osteoarthritis becomes cold and stiff down to the bones. Whether this degenerative arthritic condition is the result of an old injury (post-traumatic arthritis) or “wear and tear” from many years of hard use or even lack of use, the tissues need to be nourished and restored to eliminate the pain. What is needed by the person with this type of arthritis is warmth, flexibility and an increase in the body’s power to dissolve the excess minerals deposited in the joints. If we can increase the body’s dissolving forces, we can loosen the grip of excessive mineralization, thereby dissolving the painful deposits affecting the joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Inflammatory arthritis can be considered the opposite of osteoarthritis. This type of arthritis includes rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis and Reiter’s syndrome. Think of these types of arthritis in terms of stagnation. Inflammatory arthritis is the condition in which our tissues, in particular the tissues of our muscular and skeletal systems, become waterlogged and have unhealthy, stagnant pockets of fluid that become stiff, achy and inflamed. The inflammation settles into the cartilage and cushioning structures of the joints and if left untreated will eventually destroy the affected joint.

While there are many common factors in the treatment of these two types of arthritis, some of the remedies are specific to the type. Our first objective is to get some relief from the painful and inflamed joints that you are suffering with.  As follows are some of the herbal remedies that we have found to be very effective in relieving pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis as well as many diseases and illnesses that have an inflammatory component (such as Alzheimer’s – inflammation in the brain).

HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS

Anti-Inflammation Formula – 3 capsules - twice daily.  This powerful yet safe product will effectively reduce and eliminate the inflammation and pain of arthritis, irritable bowel complaints such as IBS and Crohn’s Disease. In addition, studies even show that the herbs turmeric and boswellia (the main herbs in this formula) benefit many other conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s, diabetes and can even be cancer preventing.
Nerve Calm Formula - both a sedative and anti-spasmodic designed to relax, sedate and relieve tension and muscle spasm associated with pain.
Pain Relief Formula – Non-narcotic pain relief, particularly suited for chronic pain.  Relaxes and calms nervous irritation associated with pain.
Deep Heat Ointment & Oil - This deep and penetrating product warms and soothes aching joints and muscles. These products can be intensified by applying after a hot shower or bath.
Arnica Oil/Extract - Used topically to relieve pain associated with injury or inflammation.
California Poppy Extract - non-narcotic pain relief that is not addictive.
White Willow bark Extract or Capsules - The very first aspirin (salicylic acid) used by Native Americans. Unlike the over-the-counter drug, white willow bark contains all of the supporting nutrients that will prevent unwanted side-effects such as stomach irritation.

Secondly, some modifications of your diet will allow your body to heal and become more flexible and active.  Almost all arthritis, joint pain and inflammation respond positively to a healthy, nourishing, wholesome diet. Nutrition is based on two things. What you eat and what you don’t eat. You must eat the health building nutritious foods and you must not eat the health-robbing foods. The issue is to focus on quality and stop putting into your body devitalized, denatured, and chemically altered processed foods.   Don’t interpret this to mean that you can never have ice cream or desserts again. Think in terms of high quality foods and treats.  What we ask is to eat healthier, better tasting, better quality food and get rid of the processed toxic-chemical laden foods.  In essence, what is described below is the farmers’ diet of 150 years ago.  Healthy, robust, very satisfying and delicious.

AVOID In Your Diet
Processed and Junk Foods.  All empty and devitalized foods should be avoided.  Read the labels and don’t eat foods with chemical additives.
Processed Oils.  Devitalized oils (such as most commercial vegetable oils and hydrogenated oils) interfere with the body’s prostaglandins causing inflammation. Avoid Crisco shortening, all margarines, canola oil, corn oil and any oil that is not cold-pressed, extra virgin.
Fruit juices and sweets made from corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup. These not only harm the immune system, but make the body more prone to inflammation.
Soda pop, especially diet soda which contain aspartame.  Many who suffer from joint pain and inflammation experience complete pain relief just by getting off the dangerous and harmful chemicals that are added to so many of our foods.  Cutting back will not help.  You’ve got to get completely off these mass marketed toxins.

EMPHASIZE in Your Diet
·    Raw butter and cream: 4 TBS/per day - these unheated fats are the carriers of warmth in the world of food and can protect us against the cold, dry stiffness of osteoarthritis. Butterfat contains a nutrient known as the anti-stiffness factor. Animal studies found that virtually any animal can be made arthritic by feeding it a low-fat diet, which includes skim and low-fat milk products. The animals’ arthritis was reversed by feeding them fresh, raw (un-pasteurized) cream or butter.  Raw butter is recommended for those with osteoarthritis, however, those with Rheumatoid arthritis just need butter (pasteurized is okay).  Think: low-fat equals pain.  Eating healthy fats/oils will lubricate your joints, relieving pain.
·    Lacto-fermented vegetables (such as sauerkraut and kim-chi) have been shown to provide the enzymes that help the body metabolize and process the anti-stiffness factor. Sauerkraut is easy to make or can be purchased in the refrigerated section of the health food store.
·            Organic Eggs - a rich source of nutrients that help to heal and rebuild the tissues.
·    Bone Broths - beef or chicken bones/cartilage that is simmered for 6 to 24 hours will be rich in factors that nourish and repair the cartilage in your joints. Include this as a daily ingredient in your soups, stews and sauces.
·    Sea Salt should be used liberally.  There are many brands that are good, just make sure that it is pure sea salt that has not been refined or processed.

Finally, it is important that we move our bodies.  Surprisingly, more damaging to the body than hard work is inactivity.  An active lifestyle that includes hard work and hard play is much less damaging than a sedentary, careful life.  I liken it to a door hinge.  The hinge that is constantly in use, even though it may require occasional maintenance or oil, will last much longer than the hinge that rusts and tightens due to lack of use.  So as follows are a few suggestions for you to consider.

THERAPEUTICS

Chiropractic -an adjustment by a skilled chiropractor can provide significant relief as you nourish your joints back to health. Just as the tire on a misaligned or unbalanced car will wear out faster than it should, so also will your spine experience more pressure and wear if your back is out of alignment. A skilled chiropractor can find even subtle imbalances and set things right, relieving the pain and pressure.

Massage therapy - a skilled massage therapist can not only soothe aching muscles associated with joint pain but help to increase the circulation, speeding up the healing process.  Remember, muscles move bones and bones can pinch nerves.  Relax and balance the muscles and you will feel oh so much better.  In addition, there are great psychological benefits of a good massage to calm the troubled mind.

Yoga – stretching combined with breathing.  Begin a daily practice and experience the benefits of strength and flexibility enjoyed by so many of the elderly throughout the world.

Castor Oil packs/compress - This remedy for many is the first choice for pain and stiffness of both types of arthritis. Castor oil supplies stimulating warmth to the cold, over-mineralized (calcium deposits) joints of the osteoarthritis sufferer, but also has an anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effect for the swollen joints of the rheumatoid/inflammatory arthritis sufferer. Simply saturate a cloth with castor oil, place on the painful joint or area and warm with a heating pad for 60 to 90 minutes.  This can be done every other day.
